Fisrt of all sorry for my "french" but ill try to write. So, you buy a iPhone. They love the phone and all its functions, but you do not have to pay for your songs twice to a ringtone. There are a lot of songs in your music library, but no way to make ringtones from any of them. Indeed, with a little tricks (nothing illegal) you can ring tones from one of your non-DRM songs in your iTunes library, free and easy. This works on both Mac and Windows PCs. * Please note there may be differences between all possible combinations of iTunes versions and OS versions - Please note the tips section for a way to work around the synchronization issues.
What you need:
iPhone
iTunes
Mac or Windows computer
Non-DRM song (ie not purchased from the iTunes Store)

Open iTunes.

Look for the title that you want to make into a ringtone.

Tips & Warnings
For all the problems with the synchronization of ringtones to your iPhone: Find the ringing tones in your folder and change the extension back to. M4A & attempt to synchronize again.
Instead of deleting it, you can also drag the newly converted ringtone on your desktop, from iTunes and follow the rest of the steps.
There may be some problems with the latest version of Leopard - renaming the file no longer work correctly, and you will not be able to put it into the ringtones folder.
This will not work with songs purchased from the iTunes Store or has that DRM (copy protection). Your best bet is to use a song that you have from a CD.

It is also quite easy to import a song from itunes into garageband and crop the song to the desired length to be used as a ringtone. Once the song is cropped you can send it directly back to itunes in it's edited form and apply it as a ringtone the next time you connect your iphone.
